Kalanchoe delagoensis
January 7, 2010
Further, the widespread culture of the plant is Kalanchoe delagoensis. It is much more known as Bryophyllum tubiflorum and generic name of "bloated". But the first name was "delagoensis" was merely mistaken for the name without a valid description (nomen nudum). With this type, compared with K. daigremontiana, we meet more often with succulent growers than growers of houseplants in the home workplace. The reason is complex and wintering cultivation technique that does not make the plant "spindly broom", but compact, dense foliage and colored plant. Many also do not like their weed nature.
Kalanchoe is a two-year delagoensis (in adverse conditions), or perennial plant, the high from 20 cm to 2 m stem is separate, nevětvený, upright. The whole plant is completely bald. The stems often grow closely side by side. The leaves grow markedly protistojně, or alternately to trifoliate. They are sessile, without stalk straight in the spread position or upright. Shape are poloválcovité, with a distinct groove on the upper side. Reach a length of 13 cm and a thickness of 6 mm. Leaves are green to gray-green color with large reddish brown spots, which act as a "mackerel tabby". The top sheet has 2-9 small, distinct, rounded tops of the teeth, on which are formed very numerous propagule. Inflorescence is a compact multiflorum panicle with drooping flowers. Flower axis amounts to 25 cm. Stopečky are thinner and up to 2 cm long. Zvonkovitého cup is shaped, reddish to green, red spattered štráfky. Calyx tube length is 2.5 - 6 mm, its corners are triangular lanceolate shape. They are markedly pointed. The crown is red, purple, yellow, pale orange to vermilion-colored, often colored červánkově. Tube is funnel-shaped crown, from 2 to 4 cm long, tapering tails are obvejčitého crown shape with blunt ends, or cut and splayed. Their length ranges from 7-12 mm and width from 6-9 mm. The stamens are initiated in the lower half of corolla tube and are all nested. Anthers are ovoid shape and size from 2 to 2.5 mm. Nektaria are squarely shaped to semicircular, with a rounded peak, up to 2 mm in length. Karpel have elongated oval shape with a length of 5.5 to 5.5 mm. The pistil is 2 cm long. The seeds have a dimension of 0.6 to 2.5 mm.
K. delagoensis is home to the southern part of the central plateau of Madagascar. Plants here colonize open grassland formations shrubbery, rocky slopes and rock crevices. Nature prefers sandy and skeletal soils. As a neophyte, K. delagoensis spread throughout the subtropical world.
There are clones and cultivars of this species, but only few are officially named.
'Spirit of 28'
Clone found in 1928 by Arnold Arboretum staff of the U.S.) during their visit to the University of Algiers. Plants are typically small, purplish-brown spots on the substrate surface khaki green leaves. Another defining characteristic of the center rib and green petals with yellowish zone, overlaid with calyx.
'Ihosy Purple'
The second clone is recently brought into the culture of plants such as ISI 2005-30. The clone has a somewhat thinner leaves, uniformly purple spots on upper leaf surface and prominent central rib light brown color. Clone J. Lavranost discovered 15 km from Ihosy, en route to the Ivohybe Farafagany in October 1995.
To Europe was a sort of přinesenz Madagascar Perrier de la Bâthié garden sometime around 1912. The place where the species was first discovered either Paris or Cambridge University Botanic Garden. The first place is unclear. In 1930 this species, as Bryophyllum tubiflorum, already common in cultivation.

All types section / genus Bryophyllum contain physiologically active substances alkaloidového type. Not otherwise is the case with K. delagoensis. I find it in alkaloids, which irritates the digestive tract. Where the species grows, it can not successfully breed cattle. After looking out of these plants suffer from fierce vomiting and refusing to eat.
Kalanchoe delagoensis is indeed easy to grow and even easier to reproduce, but .. If we have a beautifully colored plants, grown compactly we give them the maximum solar radiation, a lot of heat, and water only with caution. It is better to plant a good shed, and then let dry. Additional watering to propagule will quickly fall off by themselves, or just before. Experience to advise the most appropriate moment. Nehnojte, nehnojte soil, substrate should be sandy, low úživný. During the winter, plants provide the most sun and temperatures around 15 ° C. At Christmas time you'll get beautiful flowers. Watered with care, only to supplement your water loss flowering. I have verified that the plants will be free of water droplets over 6 months. Even then it is possible to revive them again pouring. I never, however, failed to stem bifurcated plants. Always grew separately.

I have experience with this kind of winters, and even cut off blossoms, roots and any toppings, at a temperature of about 10 Wed C. or less.
